You know that thing that you know you need to do but you keep putting it off. And then it becomes an even ‘bigger thing’ in your mind because it has gone from being a ‘nice to do’ to a ‘need to do.’
Well, here is the thing – it is never as bad as it seems. All we need to do is just do it (to quote Nike!).
Let me give you an example to explain.
I had some time off over the summer and when I stepped back into the business in early September, my inbox was rather full. I knew I should carve out some time asap to get on top of it before my diary got busy.
I didn’t. I told myself I would get around to it and instead, just dipped in and out of my inbox periodically, dealing with the ones that needed immediate attention and leaving the rest for that mythical ‘free time’ that I banked on having at some point.
Then, September got really busy with meetings, workshop delivery, networking and so on. All in all, a blooming brilliant month for the business, one of the best I have had so far.
And guess what, my inbox continued to be busy also. New emails coming in daily on top of the ones which had come in over the summer break. All of a sudden, sorting out my inbox went from ‘I’ll get around to it’ to ‘oh crap, I need to get on top of it because I might be missing things in there that I need to action!!’
I can be totally honest here can’t I? I have been feeling the ‘overwhelm’ of my inbox for over two weeks now. Two weeks! It has been on my mind constantly and it has been exhausting. And yet, there has always seemed to be something more important to do or to action.
Finally, I blocked some time out earlier this week (on the train to London to be exact) where I simply told myself – do your emails Donna! And that was when I was reminded of the concept that ‘it is never as bad as it seems.’
I took two hours of pure focus on emails, working through them methodically one by one, until my inbox was finally empty (for about five minutes when another email landed lol!). And at the end of it, I felt brilliant, accomplished, in control, calm.
Over the last few weeks, I have spent more time and energy and head space ‘thinking’ about how I need to sort my inbox out instead of just getting on and doing it. How bonkers is that!
So, what is that one thing that is currently creating unnecessary and unwanted noise in your mind that you keep putting off doing? Maybe you have an inbox that needs sorting, or a filing cabinet that needs decluttering or whatever.
My request of you this weekend is to be like Nike and just do it! Because, honestly, it is never as bad as it seems!
